The city is
named after Baltimore in Ireland, because the founding
proprietor of the Maryland Colony, Lord Baltimore, was
the hereditary Lord of the Irish town.
The small town founded during the early colonial period
on the waterfront of a small inner harbor off the
Chesapeake Bay has evolved into a thriving metropolis.
During the
American Revolution, Baltimore was a key supply hub, and
is the birth place of the Star Spangled Banner by
Francis Scott Key.
Today,
over a half million people call Baltimore City their
home.
